EECS 2031N - Software Tools

Friday, March 27

After careful considerations and following the Senate's guidelines, the grading scheme of the course is adjusted as follows:

  • 10% - Weekly labs (unchanged)
  • 15% - Assignments (increased from 10%)
  • 15% - Lab tests (decreased from 30% due to the cancellation of lab test 2)
  • 30% - Midterm test (increased from 20%)
  • 30% - Final exam (unchanged)
Please note that students can choose to keep the original grading scheme. In that case, they can write the Lab Test 2 in person after the disruption is over.

Sunday, March 15

Our course will continue using online lectures, online office hours, online submissions of assignments, as well as email and web communication.

Online Lectures

The remaining topic is Unix/Linux shell scripting. I will post recorded video lectures on shell scripting as soon as I can get technical support from the university/faculty to do so.

Online Office Hours

Many students and I myself wanted to continue face-to-face meetings in office hours. However, the instruction from the Dean's office is to avoid all in-person contact, so I will conduct office hours via Zoom starting March 23. You will receive email with the time and URL to join weekly office hours. To learn how to use Zoom, please visit https://yorku.zoom.us/

Weekly Labs

Labs 8 and 9 are not graded and only for your practice. Solutions to Labs 8 and 9 will be posted before the final exam.

Lab Test 2

Lab Test 2 is cancelled and replaced by an additional assignment (Assignment 3) worth 5% and an increase in the weight of the final exam from 30% to 40%. In my experience, students did better with assignments and written tests/exams than with lab tests. Although the final exam weight is increased, the length and difficulty of the exam is not changed.

Online Submissions of Assignments

The shell scripting part of Assignment 2 will be revised (shortened) and re-posted soon. The last assignment, Assignment 3, will be posted soon and submitted online as usual.

Email and Web Communication

Please check your email (my.yorku.ca) regularly for news and updates. The same information will also be posted on this page.

Final Exam

"A decision will be made and communicated in the coming days on the status of the final examination period scheduled for April 7 – 25, 2020", according to a communication from the Executive Committee of Senate dated March 13, 2020.

I appreciate your cooperation and patience.
