On Mac OS X, SWI-Prolog runs in the underlying Unix system. I did the following.
Install XCrystal, an X11 system originally a part of Xcode and now separate freeware.
Install MacPorts, which creates the directory /opt
From within XCrystal (X11) Install SWI-Prolog (done as superuser) using instructions given with MacPorts documentation.
