This message was emailed to EECS3101Z students on Mar 14. As you have heard, York has moved all classes online for the next three weeks. We will figure out a way for you to complete EECS3101 without coming to campus during the next three weeks. It may not be ideal, but I think the decision to suspend in-person classes was justified in the interests of public health. Please read on for information about how the course will proceed. Also, check for announcements on the course web page for updates. 1. Classes Starting Monday, my plan is to run classes and office hours via videoconference using Zoom during the regularly scheduled periods. You may have to download some Zoom software. To do this, go to https://yorku.zoom.us and select "Download Zoom". There is also some information on that page about how to use Zoom. I believe that Zoom can be used on a smartphone. (I don't own a mobile phone, so I wasn't able to test this.) But I plan to display documents during the lecture, so they will likely be easier to read on a larger screen. After the lecture, I'll provide a copy of any documents used during the lecture. If you have trouble getting Zoom to work, go to https://askit.yorku.ca for help. If you do not have a device that is compatible with Zoom, let me know your system configuration and I will see if I can get you some help from York's tech staff. You received an email message on March 14 from me with information about how to connect to the Zoom meeting. We'll spend the first few minutes of the class getting familiar with the Zoom environment. I have not used it before, so there may be some hiccups. 2. Assignments Assignment 8 (originally due on Monday) will be extended to Wed, Mar 18 at 2:30. (Note: I made Assignment 8 relatively easy because you had a test this week, so make sure you complete it.) For Assignment 8 and any future assignments, you should prepare your submission as a pdf document. The preferred option is to type it. If you are unable to type it, you may submit a scanned version of a handwritten document, but in this case please ensure that it is easy to read. (No poorly lit, badly focussed pictures of wrinkled pages written with a faint pencil, please.) Detailed instructions for submitting assignments are at https://wiki.eecs.yorku.ca/dept/tdb/services:submit:start . 3. Exam I am awaiting further instructions from the Senate Executive Committee about how exams will be conducted before making a final decision on how the final exam will be structured. I will let you know when I know more information. 4. Office Hours I will do office hours by teleconference too. Details to be determined after we see how Monday's Zoom class goes. If you want to make an appointment to talk by telephone (or Skype) outside of office hours, send me email.
