Notes about the GUI and other aspects of Maple

  1. As mentioned in class, there are different versions of Maple. Math has 12, CSE has 9, York Computing will sell you version 13.
  2. In general, you are free to work in Math mode or command prompt mode. Command prompt mode is more predictable and less user-friendly. For the labs, you will submit worksheets. It may be faster to work in Math mode, but do as you prefer.
  3. The Math mode is (or tries to be) smarter. For example if you try to type underscore as part of a variable name it takes you into subscript mode. Avoid this by typing a '\'(backslash, NOT forward slash) immediately before the underscore.
  4. Similarly if you type "Pi" it shows the symbol for Pi rather than the English text "Pi".
  5. To get out of sub- or super-script mode, press the right arrow key.
