- WHERE?
You can do your labs in one (or a combination) of the following locations:
- In a Campus Laboratories
To use a campus lab, you need an ACADLABS account, a free York account
that can be activated as explained in this
document. Once activated, you can use any campus machine with ACADLABS
access; e.g. the Maxwell lab in the CSE building (ground floor, north
side, 1st lab behind the glass wall), or Jupiter lab (226 Petrie), Pasteur
Lab (129 Farquharson), and the Computing Commons Drop in Lab (Parking
Structure II). These labs operate on a drop-in basis and each has its
own operating hours.
- At Home
You need to set up a development environment on your home PC (Fortran
compiler and an editor) as explained in Lab #1.
- WHEN?
Lab #n
must be completed by the end of week #n
of
the term (click Calendar for the exact date). If you have any question
about a Lab, or encounter difficulty completing it, you are encouraged to
ask others or seek help from the course TA. Once completed, bring the deliverables
specified in the Lab itself to the TA so that your name can be checked off.
If you could't complete a Lab during its week, you can still complete it and
have it checked by the end of the following week. No late Labs can be checked
beyond that point; e.g. the latest you can check Lab #3 is the end of week
#4.
- HOW?
Labs are not intended as evaluation instruments
that test your understanding but rather as educational tools that provide
the same coverage as that of lecture but from a practical perspective. It
is recommended that you start by reading the entire lab before you sit at
a computer. If there is anything that you don't understand, discuss it with
fellow students; talk to the Lab TA; or ask your professor in class or via
email. Each Lab consists of a list of tasks and corresponding deliverables
(answers to questions, programs, or logs of execution). Carry out the tasks
and keep any deliverable it specifies. Once all tasks are completed, take
all deliverable and a diskette containing your programs to the Lab TA (see
time/place in the home page). S/he will examine your work, may ask you a few
questions, will either record your name as having completed this lab, or ask
you to make some changes and come back.
