Assignments
The 3 assignments will involve the design and implementation of database topics discussed in the course. At least one (usually more) of the assignments involves working with a relational database using the DB2 software on Prism. Assignments will be the work of individual students, unless specified otherwise. York University's rules for academic honesty and plagiarism always remain in effect. Discussion among students is fine on the assignments. However, collaboration is not.
It is imperative that you submit your assignments by the due date/time. If you miss the due date/time, but submit it within 24 hours after it is due, there will be a 20% deduction of your score as late penalty (e.g. If your original score is 80, you will end up getting 64). No assignment will be accepted after that under any circumstances. If you miss an assignment for documented valid reason (e.g. illness with a medical note), then upon the approval of your instructor the weight of that assignment will be transferred to the final exam. Important note 1: If you happen to transfer any of the assignments' weight to the final exam and then you miss the final exam at its scheduled date, the transfer of the assignments' weight will be void for any subsequent attempts at the final exam (due to deferred exam arrangements). Essentially, missing assignments and then missing the final exam as well, is an indication of either not being serious about taking the course or of being extremely unlucky and as such you would be better off repeating it with a more serious attitude or with better luck.
Test 1 and Test 2
If you miss Test 1 for documented valid reason (e.g. illness with a medical note), the weight of your Test 1 will be transferred to your final exam.
If you miss Test 2, for any reason, then the weight of your Test 2 will be transferred to your final exam.
If you take any of the Tests and you receive a mark which is not satisfactory, then this mark will remain -- i.e., the weight of a Test cannot be transferred to your final exam once you take the Test.
No arrangements for deferred Tests can be made.
If you happen to transfer any of the Tests weight to the final exam and then you miss the final exam at its scheduled date, the transfer of the Tests weight will be void for any subsequent attempts at the final exam (due to deferred exam arrangements). Essentially, missing the midterm(s) and then missing the final exam as well is an indication of not being serious about taking the course or of being extremely unlucky and as such you would be better off repeating it with a more serious attitude or with better luck.
Final exam
If you miss the final exam you will have to petition for a deferred exam. Provided that your petition is approved, you will take the final exam at a later date. It is not unusual that the deferred exam is scheduled together with the final exam of the next time that the course is offered.
the final exam may involve questions that depend on any of the assignments. In case that you miss any of the assignments, you would still be responsible for those questions.
