General Information

This course introduces software tools that are used for building applications and in the software development process. Students will be exposed to the layers between a programming language, the operating system, and the CPU. The course covers the following topics:

ANSI-C (stdio, pointers, memory management, overview of ANSI-C libraries)
Shell programming under Unix (Bourne shell, filters and pipes)

All the above topics will be applied in practical programming assignments.
Prerequisite: EECS 1030 3.0 with a grade of C+ or better (general 2nd-year prerequisite)

Test and Exam Policy

You are allowed to miss a test/exam only under extraordinary circumstances.
If the reason is sickness, your doctor must fill in the Attending Physician's Statement form. Only this form, completely and properly filled, will be accepted.

Useful Suggestions

When sending emails to the instructor or TA, please indicate "CSE 2031" in the subject line (e.g., "CSE 2031 - Lecture notes unreadable"), or they may be deleted by mistake as spam. Include your full name and student ID in the email.
For questions related to course materials, it is best to ask during lectures or office hours. Email is not a good way to explain course materials.
Attend the lectures! The lecture notes give only outlines of the lectures. Details and additional information will be explained and discussed in class.
Read the lecture notes and textbook before and again right after each lecture. Program and run the code segments in the textbook. Work on the posted lab exercises before coming to the scheduled lab sessions.

The drop date is March 7, 2014. Numerical scores (out of 100) are used to calculate grades. Marks can be viewed via the ePost system here. If this does not work use the following command on EECS systems:
