CSE 3213: Communication Networks

Description

The course is an introduction to communications and networking. Topics covered include: Distinction between information and data, between signal and data, and between analogue and digital data. Transmission media. Time domain and frequency domain. Fundamental limits due to Shannon and Nyquist theorem. Protocol hierarchies; the OSI model. Encoding, error and flow control. Medium access. Ethernet and token passing systems in LANs. Routing of packets in networks. Internetworking.

NEWS

  • Apr 18:   Unofficial Final grades (including Lab #2 grades) are now available through ePost.

  • Apr 17:   You can view your Final exam papers and pick up your Lab 2 reports this Wednesday and Thursday between 12pm and 2pm.

  • Apr 13:   The sketch to Final Exam solutions can be found here. Final exam grades are now available through ePost. The Lab 2 grades will be available next week (the time and date to be determined). At that time you will be able to view the exams if you wish.

  • Apr 05:   Please remember to submit your Lab #2 reports in the course drop-box by Tuesday, April 10th, 11:59pm.

  • Apr 02:   Lab 1 grades are now available through ePost.

  • Apr 01: OFFICE HOURS: Monday, April 2nd, 3:00pm - 4:00pm, and Wednesday, April 4th, 12:00pm - 2:30pm.

  • Mar 28:    FINAL EXAM INFO: The final exam will be closed book and closed notes. (Basic) calculators and one-sided cheat-sheet containing formulas only are allowed! 35% of the questions will be related to the material covered before and 65% to the material covered after the midterm. The exam will cover all material (slides and textbook sections) covered in lectures.

  • Mar 23:   The sketch to Quiz 2 solutions can be found here. Quiz 2 grades are now available through ePost.
  • Mar 21:    LAB TIME: To assist students with OPNET IT Guru software, one 2-hour supervised lab session will be offered at the Networking Laboratory (CSE 2007) on  Thursday (Mar 29), 7:00pm - 9:00pm. The laboratory attendance is not mandatory. Though, the students are strongly encouraged to attend the Mar 29th session, during which they can discuss any outstanding questions/issues concerning Lab 2.
  • Mar 21:  OPNET ITGuru Lab 2 is now available! The lab report due date: Monday, April 10 in the class drop box. The box is located on the East side of the CSE's Main / Admission Office.

  • Mar 14:   Reminder: Quiz 2 will take place on Monday March 19th. Duration: 15 min. Time: at the beginning of lecture. The Quiz 2 will cover material from after the midterm (Feb 15th) and up to and including March 12th lecture.
  • Mar 12:   Today's office hours have been moved to Wednesday, 4-5pm.

  • Mar 07:  OPNET ITGuru Lab 1 is now available! The lab report due date: Mar 26 (in class). Note: The network              simulation software used in this lab (OPNET IT Guru) can be downloaded free of charge from here.
  • Mar 05:   Course evaluation is scheduled for Wednesday, March 21st.

  • Feb 17:   Note that office hours during the reading week will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 21 12pm - 2pm.
  • Feb 14:   Extra office hour for the midterm tomorrow 1pm - 2pm in CSEB 2052.
  • Feb 11:   Reminder: The midterm test will take place on Wed, Feb 15. The exam is closed book and closed notes. (Basic) calculators are allowed and one-sided cheat-sheet containing formulas only! The exam will cover all material discussed in class prior and including the lecture of Feb 8th.
