General Information
The course introduces the ways to interact with computers in a three dimensional (3D) environment, where the environment is either fully virtual or represents a mixture of real and virtual. It covers topics ranging from the hardware necessary to interface with virtual worlds, over techniques for interacting with 3D environments, to design and evaluation of 3D user interfaces.

- 3D User Interface Techniques: Selection, Manipulation, Travel, Wayfinding, System Control, Symbolic Input, 2D vs. 3D User Interfaces
- Design and Evaluation of 3D User Interfaces: Guidelines, User Studies, Result Analysis, Report Writing
- The Future of 3D User Interfaces
This course will use papers from the recent literature to aid students acquire an in-depth understanding of specific topics. The course project will require designing and implementing novel 3D user interfaces, testing those techniques with real users, and then presenting the results in a report.

Evaluation
Evaluation will be based on the following:
- 25% - Weekly paper discussions: Students will be asked to read recent papers and will discuss/review them in class.
- 45% - Course project, carried out over the entire term. The project
is performed alone (default) or in groups of two, if the topic is too
large for one person. Topics will be chosen in
consultation with the instructor. Students must implement and evaluate
a 3D User Interface (20% implementation, 25% evaluation).
Students must decide the topic of their
project by April 17. Evaluations must be finished by May 15.
- 30% - Course project report, in ACM CHI paper style.
