Fall 2004
Changes in red.
The Project component of
this course involves doing a research project and producing a research
paper. The paper must be
formatted as per submissions to "CHI" – the ACM Conference on
Human Factors in Computing Systems, sponsored by the ACM's SIGCHI. You can download the CHI publications
format from SIGCHI's web site at http://www.acm.org/sigchi/,
or just click here.
For the research project,
you must conduct a comparative evaluation conforming to the scientific method,
as presented in class. The project
involves posing a testable research question (or questions) and then answering
it (them) through a user study.
The evaluation is "comparative" because two or more conditions
are tested and compared. An
example is given in the course text, beginning on page 335 ("Evaluating
Icon Designs"). Several other
examples were presented in class (e.g., comparing soft keyboard layouts,
comparing input devices for remote pointing).
If you are happy with your
research topic used for Assignment #1, then please continue with this topic for
your project. You may also choose
a different topic, if you prefer.
The paper should be 3-5
formatted pages for undergrads, 6-8 formatted pages for grads.
Submission. Submit your review as a PDF or DOC file
in Prism using the command 'submit 4441 a3 a3.xxx', where xxx is either pdf or doc.
